The Jacobean Holy Year in Pistoia

On January 9, 2021, the Jacobean Holy Year was officially opened in Pistoia—an extraordinary occasion for pilgrims and faithful, but also for those who wish to rediscover the cultural and spiritual roots of the city.

Pistoia has deep ties to the cult of Saint James (San Iacopo), its patron saint, celebrated every year on July 25th with religious and folkloric events. On the same day, the historic Giostra dell’Orso (Joust of the Bear) takes place: the city’s Palio that brings the historic center to life with a fascinating medieval reenactment.

For the Jacobean Year, Pistoia and Santiago de Compostela are symbolically united in the name of the Saint. Despite the uncertainties of the times, the city renews its commitment to enhancing its extraordinary historical, artistic, and religious heritage.

Since 2019, Pistoia has been part of the international network of Pilgrimage Routes, a recognition that confirms its role as a significant European spiritual crossroads. In Piazza del Duomo, a commemorative stone marker donated by the Xunta de Galicia has been placed—symbolizing the connection between the pilgrimage routes of Pistoia and Santiago.

Throughout the year, the city will host celebrations, cultural events, and moments of spiritual reflection, offering visitors a true inner journey of faith and discovery.
